Wearing protective masks when entering pharmacies and healthcare facilities in Sofia is once again mandatory as an anti-epidemic measure against the spread of Covid-19, according to an order from the Sofia Regional Health Inspectorate (SRHI). The restrictions have been in effect since mid-July but will only apply temporarily, for a period of 30 days. Masks are also being reintroduced in Burgas and Yambol, and discussions are underway to extend the requirement to other regions of the country.
Starting from July 19, 2022, wearing protective masks will be mandatory when visiting hospitals, medical practices, emergency centers, kindergartens and nurseries, social care homes, pharmacies, opticians, and drugstores. The requirement to maintain a 1.5-meter distance and to regularly disinfect contact surfaces within facilities remains in place. Wearing masks on public transport continues to be recommended, according to the SRHI order.
The return of anti-epidemic measures in the capital was met with significant dissatisfaction, as they are introduced only partially. The old restrictions apply to all health and social institutions but “skip” enclosed spaces such as public buildings, buses, trams, shops, and malls. For example, all customers in large shopping centers can roam for hours without masks, but if they need to enter a pharmacy, optician, or drugstore, they must put one on. “We think this is unfair. The rules should apply everywhere or nowhere,” shared customers of SUBRA Pharmacies in Sofia.
“Since the state of emergency ended, people have indeed gotten used to shopping without protective gear. But so far, we haven’t encountered any protests against wearing masks,” commented Master Pharmacist Yordan Pavlov, manager of SUBRA Pharmacy in Bulgaria Mall, during a news broadcast on Nova TV.
For the convenience of all customers and patients, SUBRA Pharmacies are prepared to place accessible stands with various types of masks right at the entrance of their stores. People who do not have a mask on hand will be able to freely choose one from the stand and put it on before entering the pharmacy. The mask will be charged at the checkout along with other purchased medicines, cosmetics, or hygiene products.
The anti-epidemic measures in Sofia, Burgas, and Yambol are introduced temporarily for 30 days but may be adjusted depending on the development of the epidemic situation in the country, health authorities warn.
