Purpose:
An over-the-counter painkiller in the form of soft capsules that are absorbed faster than regular ibuprofen tablets.
Action:
Nurofen Express Forte relieves symptoms of mild to moderate pain such as headache, toothache, menstrual pain, also reduces fever and relieves symptoms of colds and flu. Nurofen Express Forte contains the main ingredient ibuprofen, which belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These medicines provide relief by changing the body's response to pain, swelling and fever. Nurofen Express Forte soft capsules break down easily in the body and the liquid released from the capsule is easily absorbed into the body to reach the site of pain quickly.
Warnings:
Do not take Nurofen Express Forte:
if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to ibuprofen, Ponceau 4R (E124) or any of the other ingredients of Nurofen Express Forte (listed in section 6).
if you have ever suffered from shortness of breath, asthma, runny nose or hives after using acetylsalicylic acid or other similar painkillers (NSAIDs)
if you suffer or have suffered (two or more separate episodes) from stomach ulcers or stomach bleeding
if you have had gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation related to the use of NSAIDs in the past
if you suffer from unexplained disorders of blood cell formation
if you have severe liver, kidney or heart failure or coronary heart disease
during the last 3 months of pregnancy (see section Pregnancy and breastfeeding)
if you suffer from severe dehydration (dehydration caused by vomiting, diarrhea or insufficient fluid intake),
if you have a cerebrovascular hemorrhage or other active bleeding)
Do not use in adolescents under 40 kg or children under 12 years of age.
Take special care when using Nurofen Express Forte
if you suffer from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or mixed connective tissue disease (an immune system disease causing joint pain, skin rashes and fever).
if you suffer from serious skin reactions such as exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell's syndrome). Nurofen Express Forte should be stopped at the first appearance of a skin rash, mucosal lesions or other signs of an allergic reaction
if you undoubtedly suffer from a congenital disorder of porphyrin metabolism (e.g. acute intermittent porphyria) or blood clotting problems.
if you suffer or have suffered from colon disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease).
if your kidney function is impaired.
if you have liver disorders,
immediately after major surgery.
Shortness of breath may occur if you suffer or have suffered from asthma or other allergic diseases.
if you suffer from hay fever, nasal polyps or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, due to an increased risk of allergic reactions. These may manifest as asthma attacks (so-called analgesic asthma), acute swelling (Quincke's edema) or skin rashes.
if you are taking other medicines at the same time that could increase the risk of ulcer or bleeding, such as oral corticosteroids, medicines to thin the blood (e.g. warfarin), for depression (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) or to prevent blood clots (acetylsalicylic acid).
Other warnings:
Prolonged use of painkillers to treat a headache may make it worse. In such cases, you should stop taking Nurofen Express Forte and consult a doctor.
If you suffer from chickenpox, it is recommended to avoid using Nurofen Express Forte.
With prolonged use of Nurofen Express Forte, regular monitoring of liver function, kidney function, and blood counts is necessary.
The simultaneous use of several NSAIDs, including selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors, may increase the risk of adverse reactions and should be avoided (see section Taking other medicines below).
In general, the regular use of (several types of) painkillers can lead to permanent kidney problems and should be avoided. This risk is further increased by salt loss and dehydration.
NSAID medicines may mask symptoms of infections and fever.
There is a risk of kidney damage in dehydrated adolescents.
Anti-inflammatory/painkiller drugs such as ibuprofen may be associated with a small increased risk of heart attack or stroke, especially when used in high doses. Do not exceed the recommended dose and duration of treatment.
