Selenium is a powerful antioxidant and contributes to:

• the proper function of the thyroid gland

• the immune system

• normal spermatogenesis

• maintenance of good condition of hair and nails

Selenium is not synthesized by the body, so it must be obtained through food. The content of selenium in plants is determined by its content in the soil. Sources of selenium can be both plant and animal products. But with a low content in the soil, it is also insufficient in plants, respectively in animals.

Bulgarian soils are poor in selenium. A number of studies have established low levels of selenium in wheat and flour in most settlements in Bulgaria. Bread is one of the sources of selenium. Selenium may not be preserved during heat treatment of food.

With an unbalanced diet or a low content in the soil, the intake of selenium in the body is insufficient and additional intake is required. In addition, in stressful conditions (e.g. mental tension and physical activity) additional intake of Selenium is also recommended.
