The bacterial strain Streptococcus salivarius K12 is naturally occurring in the oral cavity, and its effect has been tested in numerous studies. Streptococci are a widespread type of bacteria commonly associated with disease. However, it is less known that in this family of bacteria there are actually not only "bad" members, but also good ones - namely the bacterial strain Streptococcus salivarius K12. In a healthy oral cavity, it is the dominant microorganism and is one of the first settlers. In infants, Streptococcus salivarius K12 is detected from several hours to days after birth. Although a dense population of the oral cavity with Streptococcus salivarius K12 is beneficial, about 60% of the population loses this beneficial strain during life.
Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system in children and adults and is important for the process of cell division. This is key for the cells of the oral mucosa, as their frequent regeneration is important to maintain the function of the oral mucosa as a barrier against unwanted microbes.
