Soy lecithin
Soy lecithin is a mixture of over 50% phospholipids, fatty acids and carbohydrates. Phospholipids have many important physiological effects and are major components of cell membranes, bile juice and various transport molecules involved in cell signaling (Pepeu et al., 1990; Reynolds, 1996).
Essential phospholipids influence cell membrane permeability and are being intensively studied for their pronounced antioxidant properties. (Dajani & Popovic, 2020; Minárik et al., 2021)
The main phospholipid in soy lecithin is phosphatidylcholine. It is also a key building block in the outer layer of liver cell membranes. As the body’s primary source of choline, it plays an important role in fat metabolism, liver function, and the maintenance of normal homocysteine levels. By stimulating bile salt synthesis, phosphatidylcholine modulates cholesterol metabolism and assists the liver in its natural function of eliminating excess fat through bile (Leblanc et al, 2003).
Choline
Choline is a nutrient that the body uses to build cell membranes and produce neurotransmitters. It contributes to normal homocysteine and lipid metabolism, supporting normal liver function.
Its role in transporting fats from the liver to other parts of the body is particularly important (Corbin & Zeisel, 2012).
Silymarin (milk thistle)
Silymarin is a complex of bioactive molecules extracted from the dried seeds and fruits of milk thistle (Silybum marianum). It contains a mix of flavonolignans (silybin, isosilybinin, silychristin, and silydianin) and one flavonoid (taxifolin).
Silymarin has a traditional use for liver health (Zhong et al., 2017), and these effects are explained by its pronounced antioxidant properties, which may play an important role in the enhanced action of free radicals (Jacobs et al., 2002).
Artichoke
The artichoke (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus) is a variant of the C. cardunculus species of the Asteraceae family, to which milk thistle also belongs. Modern science has studied it primarily for its properties to support cardiovascular and liver health due to its high concentration of sesquiterpene lactones (cynaropicrin, cynarin), flavonoids (luteolin), and caffeic acid, which have a synergistic effect.
Uridine
Uridine has a multidirectional effect, as it is used to produce a number of other biologically active molecules such as RNA, glycoproteins and phospholipids, through which it participates in the normal functioning of liver cells.
It is known that uridine is involved in liver metabolism and may contribute to better adaptation of the organ, positively influencing protein synthesis, insulin signaling, and other key processes (Urasaki, Pizzorno & Le, 2014).
Vitamin D
The liver is a key organ for vitamin D, as it is where the main circulating form of the vitamin is formed, as well as its binding protein. A number of liver cells are equipped with a vitamin D receptor, through which the substance modulates their function (Keane et al., 2018; Rezaei et al., 2021).
Folic acid (vitamin B9)
The liver is the body's main reservoir for folic acid, where it participates in a series of metabolic processes. Folic acid is a key cofactor in one-carbon metabolism, a system of reactions by which the body transfers methyl and other one-carbon groups.
This makes it extremely important for the liver, because it maintains its methylation capacity, lipid metabolism, and natural detoxification functions (Yang et al., 2024).
Vitamin B12
Like folic acid, vitamin B12 is stored in the liver. Several studies have suggested that vitamin B12 status and liver health are closely linked (Gulsen et al., 2005; Koplay, Gulcan & Ozkan, 2011; Moretti, Caruso & Gazzin, 2019).
Together with folic acid, vitamin B12 contributes to reducing the feeling of tiredness and fatigue.
