Pumpkin seed extract
The active ingredients in pumpkin seeds block the enzyme 5-alpha reductase (Heim et al., 2018), which is a desirable effect in some androgen-dependent conditions affecting the prostate. Studies in nearly 4,000 men found significant improvements in a number of urinary symptoms and quality of life with excellent tolerability (Friederich et al., 2000; Vahlensieck et al., 2015). A series of other trials have shown that the combination with saw palmetto extract has a synergistic effect (Carbin, Larsson & Lindahl, 1990; Marks et al., 2000; Coulson et al., 2013).
Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens)
Saw palmetto is perhaps the most popular herb for various urinary symptoms, and numerous studies confirm that the herb contributes to normal urination (Champault et al., 1984; Stepanov et al., 1999; Boyle et al., 2000; Tacklind et al., 2012; Alcaraz et al., 2021, etc.) and sexual function (Carraro et al., 1996; Suter et al., 2012). In addition, it has pronounced antiestrogenic (Paubert-Braquet et al., 1995) and anti-inflammatory properties (Paubert-Braquet et al., 1997).
Turmeric
Curcumin has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory activities (Moghadamtousi et al., 2014; Momtazi et al., 2016; etc.). Current data from 11 studies show that turmeric extract intake contributes to the regulation of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, improves quality of life, markers of oxidative stress, and urinary symptoms (frequency, urgency, nocturia) without significant adverse effects (Bagherniya et al., 2021).
Zinc
Zinc is an essential mineral that contributes to normal testosterone levels and reproductive function. It is most concentrated in the prostate gland and is approximately 61% lower in patients with BPH (Christudoss et al., 2011). Zinc levels have been found to be inversely related to testosterone levels (Prasad et al., 1996). Clinical studies in zinc-deficient men found that taking zinc for 6 weeks increased testosterone levels by 84% (Jalali et al., 2010).
L-arginine
A 2019 meta-analysis concluded that L-arginine significantly affects erectile function, increases sexual satisfaction, and improves orgasmic function (Rhim et al., 2019). The interventions were well tolerated, with combining L-arginine with herbal extracts enhancing its effects.
Maca
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) has been traditionally used to increase physical endurance and sexual potency. Studies confirm that it does indeed increase libido (Gonzales et al., 2002; Stone et al., 2009), improve erectile function (IIEF-5) and sexual well-being (Zenico et al., 2009).
Tribulus (Cornflower)
Tribulus terrestris has traditionally been used to improve male health. Taking an extract of it stimulates male sex hormone receptors in the brain and increases the number of neurons involved in the erection mechanism (Gauthaman & Adaikan, 2005). The herb contributes to improving sperm characteristics and increasing erectile qualities and frequency of sexual intercourse (Sellandi, Thakar & Baghel, 2012). Various experiments report an increase in testosterone levels, erectile (IIEF-5) and sexual function (IIEF) with intake protocols of up to 12 months (Kamenov et al., 2017).
Panax ginseng
Panax ginseng has a long history in Eastern medicine, with scientific experiments confirming that it affects psychogenic and vascular causes of sexual dysfunction. Systematic reviews have concluded that ginseng positively modulates erectile function and has a good safety profile (Jang et al., 2008; Lee & Son, 2011). In addition, the extract stimulates spermatogenesis and sperm motility (Salvati et al., 1996).
Warnings: Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Do not use the food supplement as a substitute for a varied diet. Keep out of the reach of small children. Persons taking medication should consume the product only under medical supervision.
