Acetizal Cardio contains acetylsalicylic acid, which in low doses belongs to a group of drugs called antiplatelet agents. Platelets are small blood cells that cause blood to clot and are involved in thrombosis. When a blood clot forms in an artery, it blocks blood flow and cuts off the oxygen supply. When this happens in the heart it can cause a heart attack or angina pectoris, in the brain this clot can cause a stroke. Acetizal Cardio is taken to reduce the risk of blood clots and thus prevent: - heart attacks - strokes - cardiovascular problems in patients who suffer from stable or unstable angina pectoris. Acetizal Cardio is also used to prevent the formation of blood clots after certain types of heart surgery, in order to widen or unblock blood vessels. This medicinal product is not recommended in emergency cases. It can only be used as a prophylactic treatment. BEFORE YOU TAKE ACETISAL CARDIO Do not take Acetizal Cardio: - if you are allergic to acetylsalicylic acid or to any of the other ingredients of Acetizal Cardio - if you are allergic to other salicylates or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory remedies - if you have had an asthma attack or swelling in certain parts of the body - if you have or have had a stomach or small bowel ulcer, or other type of bleeding such as a stroke - if you have had problems with blood clotting - if you have severe liver or kidney disorders - if you are in the last 3 months of pregnancy - if you are taking the drug methotrexate, in doses over 15 mg per week TAKING ACETIZEL CARDIO WITH FOOD AND DRINKS Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract and prolong the bleeding time PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING Consult your doctor before using any medicine. Pregnant women should not take acetylsalicylic acid during pregnancy unless advised by their doctor. You should not take Acetizal Cardio if you are in the last 3 months of pregnancy, except on the advice of your doctor, in which case the daily dose should not exceed 100 mg. Taking regular or high doses of this medicinal product during late pregnancy can cause serious complications for the mother or the baby. Breastfeeding women should not take acetylsalicylic acid unless prescribed by their doctor. DRIVING AND OPERATING MACHINERY Acetizal Cardio does not affect the ability to drive and operate machinery. dose is 75-160 mg once daily. Treatment should be regularly reviewed. Use in children: Acetylsalicylic acid should not be given to children and adolescents under 16 years of age, unless prescribed by a doctor. Method of administration: For oral use. Tablets should be swallowed whole, with sufficient liquid. The tablets have a gastro-resistant coating that prevents stomach irritation and therefore should not be crushed, broken or chewed. POSSIBLE ADVERSE REACTIONS - sudden difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, face or body, rash, fainting or difficulty swallowing - redness of blistered or peeling skin, which may be accompanied by fever and joint pain. - unusual bleeding, for example coughing up blood, vomiting blood, or in the urine.
