- WHAT IS CO - LACTASE ® AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Co-Lactase ® contains the enzyme lactase and is added drop by drop to breast milk or formula before feeding.
Co-Lactase ® works by breaking down more of the lactose and helping the absorption of milk (breast or formula) in babies.
- HOW DOES UNDIGRADED LACTOSE AFFECT THE BABY?
Lactose is a complex sugar (disaccharide) found in milk, milk products, formula and breast milk. Lactase is an enzyme normally produced in the human body to break down lactose into simple sugars so they can be more easily digested. Babies' not fully developed digestive systems may have trouble breaking down lactose into simple sugars, leading to discomfort (colic). Reducing the lactose content in milk (formulated or breast milk) contributes to normal digestion in babies.
Your doctor or consultant can give you more information about how this may affect your baby.
- WHEN YOU CAN USE CO - LACTASE ®
Co-Lactase ® can be used from the day of birth.
Co-Lactase ® should only be used for the period until babies begin to produce enough of their own lactase enzyme - usually around the 3rd-4th month after birth.
Ask your doctor or consultant for further advice.
