The pharmacological properties of propolis have long been known - this bee product possesses powerful immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, bactericidal, antiviral, fungicidal, antioxidant, and antitoxic properties.
Different types of propolis, however, differ in their biological activity, which depends on the type of bees producing the propolis, and its botanical and geographical origin.
Some of the species and their plant sources include green Brazilian propolis (Baccharis dracunculifolia), red Brazilian propolis (Dalbergia ecastophyllum), European propolis (Populus nigra L.), Russian propolis (Betula verrucosa Ehrh), Cuban and Venezuelan red propolis (Clusia spp.), etc.
Among them, the so-called green Brazilian propolis stands out, produced by honey bees Apis mellifera, which collect resinous substances from the buds of Baccharis dracunculifolia - a medicinal plant of the Asteraceae family, whose distribution area covers the southeastern regions of Brazil, as well as Bolivia, Argentina and Uruguay. The bees carry the collected resinous substances to the hive and mix them with beeswax and saliva. The resulting propolis is used by the bees to seal unnecessary cracks in the hive and to protect the bee colony from viruses, fungi, bacteria and other pathogens.
Green propolis has a unique chemical composition: flavonoids (isosaccharin, aromatendrin-4′-methyl ether), terpenes (bacharin) and phenolic acids (artepilin-C, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid). Due to the high levels of phenolic compounds in its composition, especially artepilin-C (Art-C), it is considered the highest grade of propolis.
