The fruit of the Citrus sinensis tree is called "sweet orange" and differs from the so-called "bitter orange" (Citrus aurantium). It grows in the Mediterranean and tropical regions. It is said to have originated in the region between the Himalayas and southern China. The Portuguese brought it to Europe around 1400. Since then it has been spread and cultivated in several countries. The small woody plants of the Rutaceae family are hybrids obtained by crossing Citrus maxima and Citrus reticulata.
