It is extremely important because it is a kind of filter for UV rays and blue light, which are toxic to the retina and damage it. Lutein reduces unwanted scattering of light entering the eye. Thanks to this property, one can see objects quite distinctly and clearly. The lutein in Luvalik FloraGLO® is a crystallized organic product extracted from the flowers of the marigold and manufactured using a patented technology ensuring maximum concentration, absorption and bioavailability (NSF/ANSI Standard 173, section 8; approved by the FDA/US Food and Drug Administration). Lycopene is necessary for the synthesis of all pigments necessary for the eye (lutein, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene) and contributes to the antioxidant protection of the retina and other eye structures. Lycopene is the carotenoid with the strongest antioxidant properties. It reduces the inflammatory response from UV rays by neutralizing harmful free radicals. Adding lycopene to lutein intake was found to increase the antioxidant defense of eye tissues by over 51%. Lycopene is also the most abundant carotenoid in blood serum. In 1995, scientists found that people with reduced serum lycopene levels suffered from twice the risk of age-related macular degeneration (Mares-Perlman et al., 1995).
