DOPPELHERZ AKTIV Selenium Depot 120mcg x 45 tabl

The Doppelherz two-phase system is developed based on a special production technology.
Selenium is a powerful antioxidant and contributes to:

• proper thyroid function

• immune system

• normal spermatogenesis

• maintaining good condition of hair and nails

Selenium is not synthesized by the body, so it must be obtained from food. The selenium content in plants is determined by its content in the soil. Sources of selenium can be both plant and animal products. However, if the content in the soil is low, it is insufficient in both plants and animals.

Bulgarian soils are poor in selenium
A number of studies have found low levels of selenium in wheat and flour in most settlements in Bulgaria. Bread is one of the sources of selenium. Selenium may not be preserved during heat treatment of food.

In case of an unbalanced diet or low content in the soil, the intake of selenium into the body is insufficient and additional intake is necessary. In addition, in stressful situations (for example, mental tension and physical activity), additional intake of selenium is also recommended.

Uses and benefits of taking selenium
Selenium contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. It protects the body from the harmful effects of free radicals.

Sufficient selenium intake is important for normal thyroid function.

Selenium is responsible for the normal function of the immune system. It increases tone and efficiency.

Selenium contributes to improving spermatogenesis.

Selenium helps maintain good hair and nail condition.

Selenium is a component of many enzymes and is indispensable in a number of metabolic processes.

The role of selenium in thyroid function
The thyroid gland is the organ with the highest selenium content per gram of tissue in our body1. Selenium is part of various complex chemical compounds called selenoproteins. These include important antioxidants, as well as enzymes called deiodase – they are found in tissues and transform the hormone tetraiodothyronine (T4) into the more active triiodothyronine (T3). This is why selenium is important for ensuring the normal functioning of thyroid hormones.

Selenium deficiency and thyroid
It has been found that people who suffer from an enlarged thyroid gland are more likely to have a selenium deficiency compared to the rest of the population2. A similar inverse relationship has been found between selenium levels in the blood and the risk of thyroid nodules. Duntas et al. found that blood concentrations of this trace element are lower in people who are affected by Hashimoto's disease or Graves' disease3. Inadequate thyroid function is also observed in people with iron deficiency, as it is also directly related to the synthesis of thyroid hormones.

Thyroid prophylaxis with selenium
Numerous clinical studies1, 4, 5 report that selenium supplementation reduces antibodies against thyroperoxidase, a key enzyme in the production of T3 and T4. Other positive effects of selenium supplementation reported in the literature are a reduced risk of developing postpartum (after giving birth) thyroiditis and a delayed progression of hypofunction in Hashimoto's. How do we know if we have an increased need for selenium? For this question, it is best to consult a doctor - an endocrinologist. He will be able to competently assess what would be most appropriate for you at the specific moment. For example, young and fertile women who have Hashimoto's are recommended to take selenium, since the reduction in the concentration of antibodies has a positive effect on a possible upcoming pregnancy. However, you should keep in mind that studies on the use of selenium in people with impaired thyroid function

thyroid gland or as a prophylaxis of a similar condition, have been carried out mainly in the last 10 years and the data is still not sufficient to answer all the questions. If you have any doubts, be sure to consult a specialist.
