Natto Extract Natto is a traditional Japanese food made from boiled soybeans that have been fermented with Bacillus subtilis var. natto. Natto consumption is believed to contribute significantly to the longevity of the Japanese population and is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and death.
The Takayama study, involving 29079 patients, followed cardiovascular mortality over 16 years and found that natto intake was associated with a significantly reduced risk of total CVD mortality and a reduced risk of ischemic stroke (Nagata et al., 2017 ) These effects are attributed to the action of nattokinase, an enzyme secreted by B. subtilis, which has been shown to exhibit fibrinolytic activity, in addition to its other beneficial effects, including anticoagulant, antiatherosclerotic, antihypertensive and neuroprotective (Pinontoan, Sanjaya & Jo, 2021). Multiple clinical studies confirm the benefits of nattokinase for cardiovascular health. Administration of nattokinase in patients with vascular pathology has been found to improve clinical symptoms without the development of adverse drug reactions or drug interactions. The authors of the study concluded that the use of nattokinase represents an efficient and safe approach with potential prophylactic and therapeutic action in patients with vascular diseases (Gallelli et al., 2021)
Other antiplatelet agents or anticoagulants used in clinical practice can lead to various serious gastrointestinal side effects and bleeding. In contrast, nattokinase is relatively safe and has few to no side effects.
Olive Extract Hydroxytyrosol extracted from the olive fruit (Olea europaea) contributes to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress (EFSA Claim ID 2837), and LDL oxidation is a risk factor and underlies the development of atherosclerotic disease and its complications.
Hydroxytyrosol has been found to improve endothelial function and vascular wall flexibility (Stefanon & Colitti, 2016) and may reduce thrombogenesis by reducing coagulation factors, aggregation and platelet activation (Nignpense et al., 2019; Correa et al., 2008). ).
The results of the EPIC study showed an inverse relationship between olive oil consumption and mortality and morbidity from ischemic heart disease (Covas, Torre & Fitó, 2015). Oregano extract Oregano (Origanum vulgare) improves the work of the heart, strengthens blood vessels, increases the elasticity and strength of blood vessels (EFSA Claim ID 2472). Rosmarinic acid in oregano helps preserve the functional smooth muscle layer of vessels and its properties (Blažević et al., 2021).
Tarragon extract The results of a study showed that tarragon extract significantly reduced the activity of platelets in all three stages of adhesion, detachment and aggregation (Hedaryan et al., 2019).
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has rated A. dracunculus and oils and extracts derived from this species as safe for use (Food and Drug Administration, 2020).
