Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin popular for its ability to promote healthy hair and skin. It also supports the functioning of sweat glands, bone marrow and nervous tissue. It is a cofactor for the chemical reactions that take place in the engine of the cell - the mitochondria. This is why biotin is an important vitamin in fatty acid production and nutrient metabolism, like the other B vitamins.
Hair loss
Each person normally loses 50 to 100 hairs each day. Regrowth of hair is normal, but when this does not happen, the hair thins and baldness occurs. The most common type of hair loss is male pattern baldness. It is thought that follicles are programmed to stop producing hair when there are high levels of male hormones. In particular, the hormone dehydrotestosterone (DHT), which can "turn off" hair follicles. It is a very active hormone, which in some men is more active.
Women can experience a similar type of hair loss due to hormonal changes (ie postpartum and menopause).
