Xylometazoline hydrochloride
(Xylometazoline hydrochloride)
The product Xilogel 0.05% is in the form of a gel and contains xylometazoline hydrochloride. Applied to the mucous membrane, it causes constriction of blood vessels, eliminates edema, suppresses hyperemia of the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx and reduces the amount of secretion, i.e. relieves a runny nose. The medicine is in the form of a gel, which additionally makes it possible to moisten the nasal mucosa without penetrating the nasal cavities and the throat.
Xilogel 0.05% is used in children from 3 to 12 years of age.
The medicine Xilogel 0.05% is applied locally for auxiliary treatment in:
- Acute rhinitis of viral or bacterial origin.
- Acute or chronic exacerbation of sinusitis.
- Allergic rhinitis.
- Otitis media catarrhalis acute - in order to restore patency of the Eustachian tube.
Do not take Xilogel 0.05%:
- If you are allergic to the active substance or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- In patients after hypophysectomy or after other surgical craniocerebral operations.
- Dry atrophic rhinitis.
Warnings and precautions:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Xilogel 0.05%.
Use Xilogel 0.05% with caution in patients:
- in which the following symptoms have been observed after administration of other drugs with a similar effect (sympathomimetics): insomnia, dizziness, tremors, arrhythmias or hypertension;
- with circulatory disorders (e.g. arterial hypertension, angina pectoris),
- diabetes,
- angle closure glaucoma,
- prostatic hypertrophy,
- hyperthyroidism.
Patients with such diseases should consult a doctor before starting treatment with this medicine.
- The product should not be used in patients with chronic or vasomotor rhinitis who are prone to extend therapy for more than 5 days. Prolonged use (longer than the recommended period) may lead to secondary vasodilatation and, as a consequence, to iatrogenic rhinitis.
Other medicines and Xilogel 0.05%:
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using, have recently used or might use any other medicines.
- Please inform your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even those not prescribed for you. Rare cases of interaction with tricyclic antidepressants and MAOI (medicines used for depression) inhibitors have been noted. Do not apply Xilogel 0.05% during treatment with these preparations.
- The simultaneous administration of the preparation with other preparations with a similar effect (sympathomimetics), e.g. ephedrine, pseudoephedrine should be avoided.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding:
Do not use Xilogel 0.05% in pregnant women.
Consult a doctor before use.
Driving and using machines:
The product is intended for short-term treatment, but with long-term use and in high doses, systemic effects on the cardiovascular system and CNS are not excluded, which may impair the ability to drive and operate machinery.
Xylogel 0.05% contains benzalkonium chloride, due to which the product can cause irritation of the nasal mucosa.
Method of use:
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Xilogel 0.05% is used for nasal administration (also for inflammation of the middle ear).
Before the first application of the package, after removing the protective cap, press the dispenser 3-5 times until the product appears in the tip. The tip of the tip is placed in the nostril. The dispenser is pressed, holding the package vertically, which allows the medicine to be sprayed into the nose.
If the effect of Xilogel 0.05% seems too weak or too strong to you, consult a doctor immediately.
The product is used in children from 3 to 12 years of age.
- Children aged 3 to 12 years : One spray in each nostril every 8-10 hours.
Usually, treatment should not exceed 3-5 days.
Re-use should only be carried out if the application of the product has been interrupted for a period of several days.
For hygienic reasons, one package should only be used by one patient.

Storage:
- To be stored in a well-closed package.
- To be stored at a temperature of up to 25°C. Keep away from light.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
- Shelf life after first use: 12 weeks.
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton. The expiration date corresponds to the last day of the specified month.
