ADVENT LIFE Liver Function Test (AST/ALT)
The liver is a major organ that plays a crucial role in health. It helps break down food, purify the blood, produce protein and store energy. Causes of a liver problem can be hepatitis, cirrhosis, and excess weight. With liver problems, a number of symptoms may appear such as dark urine, light stools, lack of appetite, jaundice, bloating, weakness, feeling very tired. Liver tests are heterogeneous, but the most commonly used tests are to evaluate transaminase enzymes (ALT and AST). These enzymes are released into the blood by the liver in response to injury or disease. In the event of liver damage, ALT and/or AST are released from the liver into the bloodstream. The Liver-Screen® rapid test detects these transaminases.
