Varicose veins
Varicose veins are a common phenomenon in more than 50% of middle-aged people. Varicose veins are caused by a violation of the walls of the veins, which lead to their swelling and damage to their valve apparatus. Increased pressure in the veins leads to swelling and pain. Even just standing upright for a long time increases the pressure on the vein wall up to about 10 times.
The legs are most at risk because the pressure in the veins is the highest there.
Increased risk factors for the appearance of varicose veins are:
- obesity;
- old age;
- irregular motor activity;
- hereditary predisposition;
- loss of tissue tone and thinning of venous walls;
- abuse of alcohol and cigarettes.
Varicose veins are an occupational disease in people working straight.
Women suffer from similar diseases four times more often than men.
Pregnancy, especially the second, is also a risky condition. Weight and pressure from the fetus increase the prerequisites for the appearance of varicose veins.
The most common complaints are:
- heaviness and tension in the legs;
- itching, pain, redness;
- swelling, especially around the ankles.
All these signs indicate problems with the veins. Untimely treatment can lead to complications - wounds, thrombosis, eczema, clots.
Varicose veins also create cosmetic inconveniences.
Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are one of the most annoying manifestations of venous insufficiency.
They are abnormally swollen veins in the rectum and anus. They are very similar to varicose veins. Once swollen, hemorrhoids become inflamed and cause swelling of the membranes surrounding them, itching, pain, and bleeding. Hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure in the rectum, which swells the walls of the veins and sometimes bursts them.
Hemorrhoids are caused by:
- prolonged sitting;
- straining caused by constipation and hard stools;
- births;
- frequent weight lifting.
There are two types of hemorrhoids: external and internal.
Internal ones are usually felt deep in the rectum. Because bleeding from them can mask symptoms of colorectal cancer, this necessitates their treatment.
External hemorrhoids cause the well-known discomforts – pain, burning and itching.
If an external hemorrhoid becomes isolated from the bloodstream, a clot forms that causes great pain.
Once obtained, hemorrhoids reappear because the vein is already deformed.
Good hygiene habits and prophylaxis can successfully control this form, and surgery is rarely required in severe cases.
There are several ways of treating varicose veins and hemorrhoids:
- lifestyle change accompanied by more physical activity;
- healthy eating;
- resorting to hygiene measures, compression bandages, socks, shoes;
- drug therapy;
- surgery.
