Hyaluronic acid, also called hyaluronan, a transparent and dense substance that is produced naturally in the human body. The highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid are found in the skin, connective tissue and eyes. Its main function is the retention of water in the tissues and hence – maintaining their lubrication and hydration.
Hyaluronic acid is used in pharmacy and cosmetics for a number of reasons, being traditionally used in anti-aging serums, eye drops and injectable solutions. But it can also be used as a supplement, with a significantly better effect in a number of cases.
About half of the hyaluronic acid content in the whole body is found in the skin, where it binds with water and helps to maintain its hydration. The natural aging process, as well as exposure to factors such as UV-radiation from the sun, tobacco smoke and pollution can reduce the concentration of hyaluronan in the skin and contribute to the deterioration of the appearance. It has been found (Kawada, et. al., 2014) that taking hyaluronic acid supplements can compensate for this decrease and supply the body with additional amounts of the valuable substance to be incorporated into the skin's composition and contribute to improvement of her state and outlook. Hydrated skin enjoys a significantly better appearance, with reduced visibility of wrinkles and a smoother texture (Oe, et. al., 2017).
Hyaluronic acid is no less valuable as a joint lubricant. A number of studies have demonstrated that regular intake of hyaluronic acid supplements for a minimum of 2 months can reduce pain in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, especially in the age range of 40–70 years (Tashiro, et. al., 2012; Kalman, et. . al., 2008; Oe, et. al., 2016; Jensen, et. al., 2015).
