NOLIPID is a food additive containing Policosanol. Policosanol is a mixture of higher primary aliphatic alcohols isolated from sugarcane molasses, the main component being octacosanol. This mixture has been shown to lower cholesterol in trials with healthy volunteers and patients with type 2 hypercholesterolemia, and that daily doses of 10 mg of policosanol are as effective in lowering total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol as the same dose of simvastatin or provastatin. and in addition increases the level of HDL-C.
The efficacy and tolerability of policosanol has been documented in more than 30,000 patients in over 60 clinical trials.
Short-term studies over a 6- or 8-week period in patients with type 2 hypercholesterolemia showed that 10 mg daily reduced total cholesterol by about 13-16% and LDL-C by about 18-22%, respectively. and also that with 20 mg daily LDL-C can be lowered by about 30%.
Long-term studies conducted over a period of 1 and 2 years show that the lowering effects of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol are maintained throughout the period and that maximal effects are achieved after 6 to 8 weeks of treatment.
Of particular interest is the ability of policosanol to increase HDL-C. In this respect, policosanol appears to be superior to both statins and fibrates. It is important that policosanol does not provoke a rebound effect after stopping the intake.
Comparative studies of policosanol versus lovastatin, simvastatin, pravastatin, gemfibrozil, bezafibrate, probucol and acipimox have been conducted. In short, policosanol is slightly more effective at lowering LDL-C and significantly better at raising the good cholesterol HDL-C.
A comparative study shows that the antiplatelet effects of policosanol are the same as those of aspirin and that the combination of the two agents has some advantages over the respective monotherapies.
Research on policosanol to date, as well as carcinogenicity tests, do not give cause for concern in terms of safety. Policosanol is completely harmless.
