Belonging to the Cruciferous family, it is among the oldest known medicinal herbs. One of the most important of these is alcohol, a study reported the use of 420 milligrams of silymarin in patients with liver problems. Twenty subjects were followed for a period of 6 to 36 months, 50% of whom showed some improvement. The standardized milk thistle extract is extracted from the seed of the plant. It consists of compounds called silymarins, which studies have shown to have anti-hypotoxic (liver-protective) effects. Silymarin is composed of many flavonolignans, including silybin, isosilybin, dehydrosilybin, silydianin, and silycristine.
Silymarin and silybin serve as antioxidants, protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. In addition, these ingredients protect red blood cell membranes against lipid peroxidation and hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells) caused by some poisons. In fact, many studies conducted on silymarin show that it not only protects liver cells from toxic substances, but also stimulates protein synthesis to accelerate the regeneration and production of liver cells. What's more, Milk Thistle can increase the effectiveness of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant in this organ.
