What is Melatonin?
Melatonin is produced in the pineal gland of the brain and also in the gastrointestinal tract and retina of the eyes. It is secreted at night, naturally from the amino acid tryptophan, through serotonin synthesis.
Melatonin acts as a regulator of the human internal biological clock. Human life is subject to a certain biological rhythm, and through it the precise regulation of the various organs and systems in the body is ensured. Melatonin's role is paramount to the proper function of this mechanism.
How important is melatonin?
With high levels of Melatonin in the brain, nighttime awakenings are significantly reduced and sleep quality is improved. It regulates the levels of other hormones for better sleep and relaxation of the body. Low levels of melatonin can lead to disturbances in the quality of sleep or feelings of anxiety and fear, and sometimes prolonged fatigue and aggression towards others.
Melatonin also supports the action of antioxidants in food and helps to stimulate the immune system.
