What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?
Polycystic ovary syndrome /or polycystic ovary syndrome/ is a complex disorder of the function of the ovaries, organs of the female reproductive system that produce mature oocytes. In the presence of this syndrome, the ovaries have larger than average sizes and contain numerous cysts inside, small cavities filled with liquid; the outer surface appears rough from an unusual number of small follicles. In polycystic ovary syndrome, many follicles do not reach full development, ovulation occurs infrequently, and patients may experience irregular menstrual cycles and a state of infertility. Other signs of the syndrome are a feeling of heaviness, early baldness and increased hair growth. Scientific research shows that this syndrome occurs more often in women who are fuller or overweight and have a hereditary burden of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
What is the physiological role of inositol and folic acid?
Although we cannot define it exactly as a vitamin, inositol is considered a vitamin factor, part of the B group. In the human body, it is present in phospholipids and is able to stimulate the endogenous production of lecithin. Scientific research shows that taking inositol contributes to the improvement of ovarian function. Its biological role also consists in the specific activity of controlling the metabolism of fats and sugars and the cellular functions of the nervous system; as a result, inositol is found to be essential for hair growth and hair loss. Scientific research has revealed how diabetic patients eliminate a significantly greater amount of inositol than non-diabetic patients. In cases of insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, inositol contributes to the improvement of the general clinical picture; in this context, inositol may be useful in preventing and correcting the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the metabolic and reproductive disorders associated with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin belonging to the B vitamins. Folic acid plays a major role in amino acid metabolism, protein and nuclear synthesis, and chromosome repair, which is why it is a major factor in normal cell division and tissue growth. Its activity contributes to the fight against conditions of hyperhomocysteinemia.
What are the nutritional sources of inositol and folic acid?
INOSITOL
The richest plant sources of inositol include: citrus fruits, cereals, dried fruits, peanuts, seeds /wheat sprouts/, vegetables, brewer's yeast. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain more inositol than frozen, canned and salted products.
FOLIC ACID
Folic acid is contained in green plants with broad leaves, in the liver, in eggs and vegetables, while its content is scarce in fruits (except oranges), meat and milk. Heat treatment of food destroys almost completely the folate content in a few minutes.
What are the indications for taking Inofolic as a dietary supplement?
