Jamieson Folic Acid 400 mcg
A B-complex vitamin, folic acid acts as a coenzyme for DNA synthesis and enhances natural blood cell formation. An important nutrient before and during pregnancy, folic acid helps regulate embryonic and fetal development. Taking folic acid before and during the first three months of pregnancy can help prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida.
Folic acid also supports cardiovascular health. Folic acid is important for the conversion of the amino acid methionine into cysteine. If this vitamin is not sufficient, or if there is a defect in the enzymes responsible for this conversion, elevated levels of homocysteine result. It is a byproduct that accumulates in the body, damaging the inside of blood vessels and the cardiovascular system. By regulating the body's production and use of this harmful compound, folic acid can prevent this build-up.
