Gaviscon Liquid Sachets belongs to a group of medicines called "reflux suppressants", with the main ingredient alginate. Alginic acid is a natural carbohydrate that is extracted from seaweed. When a spoonful of the syrup is taken, the combination of alginic acid and calcium bicarbonate creates a protective barrier foam on the surface of the stomach contents, which prevents the leakage of stomach acid from the stomach into the esophagus.
