Evening primrose oil is not only a source of this acid, but also of so-called gamolenic acid (also known as gamma-linolenic acid or GLA). This fatty acid, normally produced in the body from linoleic acid, has many important properties. It is transformed in the body to eicosanoids, hormone-like chemicals that include prostaglandins. Prostaglandins help control such processes as inflammation, blood clots, and cholesterol synthesis.
